The Convention on Biodiversity states that biodiversity underpins all fishing activities. It requires states to take into account conservation when determining policy.
The Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic means that signatories including the UK are committed to preserving the balance of the ecosystem and maintaining sustainability through the implementation of regulatory measures for fishing activities, amongst other objects.
The Fisheries Act provides eight objectives for fisheries in the UK, which are:
the sustainability objective,
the precautionary objective,
the ecosystem objective,
the scientific evidence objective,
the bycatch objective,
the equal access objective,
the national benefit objective, and
the climate change objective.
The UK Marine Strategy Regulations 2010 require the UK to take the necessary measures to achieve or maintain Good Environmental Status (GES) through the development and implementation of the UK Marine Strategy (UKMS).
Scotland's Biodiversity Strategy sets out our ambition to halt nature loss by 2030 and make substantial progress to restore nature by 2025. It includes protecting nature at sea as well as on land and embedding nature positive fishing.
Recognises that we have a responsibility: to preserve and sustain the seas' ecosystems; to support the jobs and livelihoods which depend on them; to strengthen the local communities whose lifeblood is intrinsically linked to the sea; and to encourage all users of the marine environment to develop a positive future together with mutual respect.
Scotland's Blue Economy Vision aims for sustainable use of ocean resources by 2045 to foster economic growth, improve livelihoods, and support marine ecosystem health. The vision promotes a "shared stewardship" of marine and freshwater environments, focusing on transformative change for nature-positive marine sectors, jobs, and communities that contribute to a well-being economy. It also seeks to tackle the intertwined challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change.
Includes sea fisheries objectives to harvest fish stocks sustainably, support communities where fishing is a viable career option and value is added through the supply chain. Aims to manage fisheries on regional basis, in line with environmental priorities, and evidence-based approach.
